Renting safely in Abuja
Confirming who you are dealing with before money changes hands.
Confirm whether you are dealing with the landlord or an agent, and ask to see written authority where an agent is involved.
Ask for the full cost of occupation in writing: rent, the payment frequency, service charge, agency and legal fees, caution deposit and any association levy.
Inspect the property in person, and record its condition in writing with photographs before you move in.
Insist on a written tenancy agreement and a receipt issued in the landlord's name. Do not pay in cash to an unverified individual.
